Beginnings

Martins Hill Organic Vineyard's first vines were planted in 1985 by our dear friend, Michael Sweeney and his late wife, Janette Kenworthy. Michael was committed to organic farming practices from the outset. Over the years, the vineyard has flourished, producing high-quality grapes free from synthetic chemicals and pesticides. Michael's dedication to organic principles has fostered rich, biodiverse soils leading to beautiful wines that genuinely reflect their terroir.

Later Years

In later years, Louise, Michael's current wife, joined Martins Hill. Louise has played a pivotal role in building the business. Her contributions were instrumental in expanding the business side of Martins Hill Organic Wines. Louise's unwavering support, partnership and dedication not only helped sustain the business but also propelled it to new heights of success.

Next Chapter

Michael Sweeney decided that at 80 years of age and after nearly four decades of dedication to organic grape growing, it was time to pass the torch to new owners who shared his commitment to sustainability and quality. Mike and Kim Nelson took over Martins Hill in 2021. The transition was marked by careful planning and a shared vision to ensure the vineyard's legacy continued to thrive. Michael and Louise Sweeney remain frequent visitors to the vineyard, imparting their considerable knowledge on sustainable farming.
